Title: Study of selectivity in Glycosylation reactions

Science: β linked carbohydrates are a common motif in the design of carbohydrates based drugs and vaccines. However, the selectivity of glycosylation reactions is usually poor or directed toward the α-anomers (thermodynamic product). The urge of chemist and biochemist is to address the problem related to the selectivity of glycosylation reactions, and implement a strategy which would allow the β-selective glycosylation of carbohydrates.

Among all the strategies presented in the last decades, fluorine directed β-glycosylation is one of the most prominent and efficient. In this project fluorine was installed at the C2 position of glucose and the glycosylation was tested for a series of pharmaceutical relevant building blocks. The selectivity of the glycosylation reaction was compared to the one of native sugar (C2 = OH) and the deoxy sugar (C2 = H). The screening results were analysed by 19F NMR, 1H NMR and LCMS.
